From the ICBR 2025 Exhibition Floor: “An Innovative Battery Sorting Solution Using X-rays and AI”

As part of our series introducing companies from the exhibition floor of the 2025 International Congress for Battery Recycling (ICBR), our second feature focuses on LINEV System UK. The company is known for a wide range of X-ray screening equipment, including an automatic sorting system for used portable batteries and accumulators.

According to Neil Harrington, who spoke to us at the company’s booth, most operators in Europe still rely on manual sorting when it comes to used portable batteries. The main reason is that batteries without labels are difficult to classify, making visual inspection the most reliable option. But this work is physically demanding, involving long hours of standing, and raises potential health concerns for workers. Moreover, manual sorting is far from perfect: a large number of “miscellaneous” batteries end up unclassified, and cross-contamination occurs when different types are mixed together. Costs are also significant, ranging from worker training to overtime pay for night shifts. LINEV System’s automated battery sorting solution promises to address these issues at once. Depending on the type of battery, the sorting accuracy reaches an impressive 95 to 98 percent.

Precision diagnostics for efficient battery sorting

With global demand for battery recycling rising alongside the push for resource circularity, Europe is at the forefront under the EU Batteries Regulation, which mandates not only collection and recycling but also the use of recycled materials in certain batteries. Yet in reality, many portable batteries lack clear labeling, leaving their contents unknown. This makes efficient sorting of used portable batteries a major challenge in the recycling process.

LINEV Systems’ “BATTERAY” provides a solution by combining X-ray detection with AI algorithms to classify batteries according to their internal chemical composition with high accuracy.

The technology behind BATTERAY

BATTERAY operates on a high-speed imaging and real-time classification system. X-rays visualize the internal structure of batteries, while AI analyzes the data to sort them by chemistry—such as lithium-ion, nickel-metal hydride, and alkaline. Building on this core technology, the company has developed “BATTERAY ZETA,” designed for even greater precision in identifying and sorting used batteries. Positioned as a next-generation solution, ZETA targets industrial recyclers looking for efficiency and reliability.

New product: BATTERAY OptiX strengthens detection with optical recognition

A recent innovation in the BATTERAY lineup is “BATTERAY OptiX.” This optimized version incorporates a linear optical camera, combining optical recognition with X-ray scanning to further enhance robustness and reliability. It is particularly effective at identifying batteries with different physical or visual structures.

Safety and wide-ranging applications

Battery sorting is essential to prevent fire hazards and contamination in recycling streams. By detecting batteries before they can cause damage on processing lines, BATTERAY functions as a preventive tool rather than a corrective one.
The system is also designed for industrial recyclers handling mixed flows of household batteries, storage cells, and electronic waste. Its applications range from lightweight waste and electrical appliances to municipal waste streams that may contain damaged lithium-ion batteries.
