Vedanta Aluminium, which is leading in aluminium production in India, has recently finished its huge expansion project at its alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, in the state of Odisha, increasing its production capacity to 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). This project has placed its refinery second in the world outside China to produce alumina. This will enhance India's stand in China's dominance in alumina production.
The project has caused a substantial augmentation in India’s total aluminum refining capacity to about 13 MTPA, making India one of the top three aluminum-producing countries in the world. Today, India’s total aluminum production is comprised of about 38% by the Lanjigarh aluminum refinery.
Operating Efficiency and Output Performance
The capacity expansion has already translated into strong production performance. As per information provided by the company, it achieved the highest ever production of alumina in its month of November with 254,000 tonnes of alumina production at its Lanjigarh refinery, marking a record 68% growth over the corresponding period of last year.
Formerly having an operating capacity of 2 MTPA, this growth in refining capacity to 5 MTPA stands out as one of the largest investments in recent years in alumina production in India. This serves as one of the largest investments in recent years in alumina production in India.
Strategic Importance for India’s Aluminium Sector
Alumina extracted from bauxite is a key raw material for the production of aluminium. The demand for aluminium remains on a strong growth trajectory due to increasing demands from the electric vehicle segment, renewable energy infrastructure projects, aerospace and defense sectors, and lightweight construction sectors. The domestic alumina capacity in India has always trailed the country’s aluminium production plans.
Through the expansion of the Lanjigarh refinery, Vedanta is ensuring greater raw material indigenization, thus reducing the country's dependency on imported alumina. This project falls in line with the Indian manufacturing strategy of ensuring greater indigenization of raw materials and the development of the country's production capacities through the initiatives of the Indian government.
Integration with Vedanta’s Downstream Operations
The Lanjigarh alumina refinery is an integral part of alumina supply to Vedanta’s aluminium smelters, including its mega units at Jharsuguda in the state of Odisha and at BALCO in Chhattisgarh. Increased alumina supply from Lanjigarh is expected to help maximize production with improved cost competitiveness, with reduced dependence on international price variability.
Vedanta has also focused on ensuring long-term bauxite supply in order to facilitate refining. The company is pursuing development in captive bauxite mines such as the Sijimali bauxite mine and will help enhance supply security for the Lanjigarh refinery in the medium to long term.
Global Positioning and Industry Impact
Globally, alumina refining capacity is predominantly lumped in China. The development of large plants in other regions, for example, Vedanta’s alumina refinery at Lanjigarh, has been considered an important step in unearthing diversified supply chains in alumina. The alumina refinery, considered to have an alumina capacity of 5 MTPA, represents one of the single-line alumina production facilities in the non-Chinese alumina market.
Vedanta’s investment shows their faith in the future growth of the Indian aluminium industry and also in the increasing demand for aluminium products in India and internationally. It also prepares the company to be at the forefront of India’s transformation into a competitive force in the world for aluminium production and manufacturing.
Outlook
With the anticipated increase in the future demand for aluminium amidst the energy transition and infrastructure development, Vedanta's increased alumina production capacity is well placed for future expansion. The scaling, performance, and synergies of the Lanjigarh refinery with the overall value chain of Vedanta's operations would have a pivotal role to play in the future expansion of the manufacturing base of India and the position of the metals segment in the global context.
