AM/NS India Launches Value-Added Steel for Appliances Following Galvanizing Line Inauguration

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India is now also emphasizing value-added steel with the introduction of two new high-end products specifically suited to the rapidly expanding consumer appliance market. This is a clear indication of the company’s shift in focus towards downstream steel, which is more processed and has a higher margin compared to conventional steel. The downstream steel is processed and designed for specific industries such as automobiles, appliances, and construction.

Value-added steel is conventional steel that has been processed further to increase its strength, corrosion resistance, surface finish, and aesthetic value. The Indian consumer durables market is expected to be the fourth largest in the world by FY27. This indicates that the demand for coated and design-oriented steel is increasing rapidly. Currently, India consumes 11.1 million tonnes of coated steel every year, and the demand is expected to increase by 8-10% every year. The appliance market, in particular, is expected to see an increase in the demand for coated steel at a rate of 10% per annum due to factors such as urbanization, increasing incomes, premiumization, and government initiatives such as the Production-Linked Incentive Scheme.

According to the firm, the “new products are premium branded steel solutions engineered to meet the increasingly design-led needs of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) across appliance and industrial manufacturing ecosystems.”

This move is part of the overall import substitution strategy that AM/NS India has been pursuing. In July 2025, the firm opened a 0.5 million tonne per annum continuous galvanizing line for the automotive industry at its Hazira, Gujarat plant. This is in addition to the overall import substitution strategy that AM/NS India has been pursuing.
