According to The Economic Times (ET), Synergy Advanced Metals Limited (SAML), a New Delhi-based company, has signed four memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the Ministry of Steel to join the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for specialty steel, which is a significant move towards developing the domestic high-value steel production sector in India.
PLI Scheme Participation and MoU Details
The MoUs were signed after a careful evaluation process conducted by MECON Limited, the program management agency appointed by the ministry to execute the scheme and evaluate the eligibility of applicants. The evaluation process ensures that the companies participating in the scheme are technically and financially competent, as well as meet production standards set by the government’s industrial policy.
Commenting on the occasion, Anubhav Kathuria, Managing Director of Synergy Advanced Metals, said that the agreement is an important milestone that reiterates the company’s long-term commitment to developing India’s specialty steel domain. He also highlighted that the partnership is in line with the country’s flagship Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, which are designed to minimize import dependence and develop manufacturing prowess in the country. The company’s involvement is also expected to give a boost to the growth of stainless steel and other advanced steel product segments in the country.
Investment Commitments and Capacity Expansion Under PLI 1.2
According to industry data reported by ET, and based on official government announcements, a total of 85 MoUs have been signed with 55 companies under PLI Scheme 1.2 for specialty steel, with a cumulative investment commitment of around ₹11,887 crore. These projects are expected to add a cumulative 8.7 million tonnes of specialty steel production capacity by FY2031, which is expected to give a major boost to India’s presence in the premium steel domain.
The newly committed capacity expansion will mainly focus on value-added segments such as electrical steel, alloy steel, coated steel products, and specialty grades used in strategic sectors such as infrastructure, defense, automotive, and renewable energy. These sectors have always been more import-dependent due to their complexity and quality requirements, making capability building in these sectors a policy priority.
Other coverage from the business and industry community mentions that the specialty steel PLI scheme aims to not only increase production but also trigger technological upgrades and supply chain localization. The scheme aims to encourage companies to invest in advanced metallurgical technologies, precision rolling, and high-grade alloy development.
Policy Significance and Industry Outlook
In terms of policy, the scheme is a part of the overall industrial policy of the government to shift the focus of India in the value chain of steel. Although India is one of the largest producers of crude steel in the world, the specialty steel sector is still in its infancy stages compared to other major players in the global market, including Japan and South Korea.
The Ministry of Steel has been emphasizing that the PLI scheme will play an important role in cutting down the dependence on imports, especially when it comes to high-quality steel. The policy framework aims to develop a stronger industrial base and improve trade dynamics by promoting the production of high-quality steel in the country.
For Synergy Advanced Metals, the MoUs represent a vision of future-oriented expansion, which is based on policy support and increasing domestic demand for specialized steel. With the investment commitments under the PLI scheme starting to bear fruit in the form of operational capacity over the next few years, the presence of companies such as SAML is expected to make a significant contribution to the transformation of the Indian steel industry into a more technologically advanced and self-reliant sector.
