Tata Steel to Launch Ludhiana Plant in March

According to the Economic Times, Tata Steel is set to commence operations at its new manufacturing plant in Ludhiana from March, marking a significant milestone for industrial development in Punjab. Announced by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the project reflects growing investor confidence in the state’s industrial policies, governance, and infrastructure support.

Located near HiTech Valley, the facility will feature a 0.75 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)-based steelmaking unit along with a rebar mill. Spread across 115 acres, the project represents a major scale-up from its initial planned investment of ₹2,600 crore, which has now increased to approximately ₹3,200 crore. The plant is also expected to generate employment for around 2,500 people, contributing to regional economic growth and local job creation.

A notable aspect of the Ludhiana plant is its commitment to sustainability. The unit will use 100 per cent steel scrap as raw material and adopt environmentally friendly production processes. EAF technology is widely recognized for reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional blast furnace methods, aligning with India’s broader decarbonization and circular economy goals in the steel sector. Scrap-based steelmaking also lowers energy consumption and supports resource efficiency, which is becoming increasingly important as global ESG standards tighten.

Once operational, the Ludhiana facility will become Tata Steel’s second-largest plant in India after Jamshedpur and the company’s biggest investment in Punjab to date. The state government has emphasized its role in ensuring timely execution and providing full administrative and policy support for smooth operations and future expansion. Strategically, the plant strengthens North India’s steel supply chain, especially for construction-grade steel such as rebars, which are in high demand due to ongoing infrastructure and urban development projects across the region.
