BHEL Bags Large-Scale Captive Power Plant Order from SAIL to Fuel Expansion of IISCO Steel Plant

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a leading engineering and manufacturing company in the country, has bagged a large-scale captive power plant order from Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), worth around Rs 1,200-1,500 crore, which is a major breakthrough in the current capacity augmentation drive in the steel industry in India.

The order is associated with the expansion of SAIL’s IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur, where the crude steel capacity is being increased to 4.08 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). As reported from regulatory filings, BHEL has received the letter of acceptance for the captive power plant order, which assumes immense significance in providing a stable power supply to the expanded steel plant.

Strategic Significance of the Captive Power Plant

The captive power plant is likely to be operational within 39 months from the date of award of the contract (excluding GST), which is in line with the overall expansion plans of SAIL. In an integrated steel plant, the captive power plant plays a crucial role in ensuring continuous production as steel is a highly energy-intensive product.

According to industry experts, the setting up of the captive power plant will increase the reliability of operations and make the Burnpur plant less dependent on the grid supply system, which is a critical factor considering the growing need for infrastructure steel in the Indian steel industry.

Compliance with the Steel Expansion Plans in India

The agreement is also a manifestation of the government’s efforts to promote indigenous manufacturing capabilities and minimize import dependence in the major industrial sectors. SAIL’s expansion of the IISCO Steel Plant is part of its long-term plans to enhance its production capacity and technological effectiveness to meet India’s infrastructure development and construction requirements.

BHEL’s participation also highlights its continued role as a major engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor in the execution of large industrial and power projects in the country. The company has been providing boilers, turbines, generators, and balance-of-plant packages for major thermal and captive power plants, especially in the steel industry.

Broader Industrial and Economic Implications

The proposed project is likely to create substantial industrial activity, such as equipment production, engineering, and construction, and hence will help in the development of the eastern part of India. In addition, the improved power infrastructure will help in achieving greater efficiency at the IISCO steel complex, which is one of SAIL’s key steel-making facilities.

With the Indian government’s aim to achieve growth in steel production in the coming years to cater to the country’s infrastructure, automotive, and manufacturing sectors, projects involving the expansion of integrated steel facilities, such as the Burnpur project with dedicated power supply, are being increasingly recognized as critical to the Indian steel industries' viability.
