Market Deployment of Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries and Vanadium as a Critical Material

Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs) have been drawing significant attention as a “non-lithium” alternative in Japan’s FY2025 subsidy programs and Long-Term Decarbonized Power Source Auctions, particularly from the perspectives of long-duration operation and safety.
The critical material in VRFB technology is vanadium, the primary component of the electrolyte. As a mineral resource, vanadium is globally distributed rather than geographically concentrated, making it a strategic material that Japan should secure through an “All-Japan” initiative.
In this presentation, we will discuss the latest market trends surrounding VRFB deployment, as well as the technological potential of vanadium extraction technologies that have been developed and accumulated over the past 40 years. Through this discussion, we aim to highlight both the growing role of VRFBs in the decarbonization landscape and the importance of establishing a stable and sustainable vanadium supply chain.
バナジウムレドックスフローバッテリー（VRFB）は「長時間運用・安全性」の観点から、2025年度の補助金案件及び長期脱炭素電源オークション案件では「リチウム以外」の選択肢として注目を浴びています。このVRFBのクリティカルマテリアルは電解液の主要原料であるバナジウムです。鉱物資源としてのバナジウムは、グローバルに遍在しており、今こそオールジャパンで確保に動くべき素材です。今回は最新の「VRFBの市場動向」と、40年来の積み重ねのある「バナジウム抽出の技術可能性」を改めて広く世に問いたく、弊社の講演テーマとさせていただきます。
