E-scrap circulating in domestic markets

2016.08.30 08:28

More than 10,000 tons of e-scrap has been constantly imported to Japan per month. Recently, purchases from China have been decreasing and offers from Hong Kong have continued instead. Dealers specialized in e-scrap have seen the domestic trades become more active in the industry over the past year.

As the demands from domestic nonferrous smelters are strong, they have ordered more e-scrap in the domestic markets. The demand and supply has balanced in the e-scrap markets in Japan, which rarely happens in other metal scrap markets with declining inflow volume.

However, the prices of imported e-scrap remain at a higher level as some of them could be traded as not e-scrap but parts in Asian or any other overseas e-scrap markets. Especially, the prices of server boards, motherboards and modem boards are relatively high.

For example, the prices of server boards are around JPY700-800 per kilo for recycling, but the prices in reuse markets are up by more than 30% from the recycling prices.

More mixed boards have been offered.

Also, sub-boards from pachinko have been constantly offered to Japan from Hong Kong where more Japanese pachinko boards are circulated.

This is thought to be due to the fact that there are more smelters in Japan which can provide appropriate e-scrap processing. But, as recycling is more dominant in Japanese, it seems that the Japanese e-scrap recycling prices have not yet been able to become the index for Asian markets focusing on reuse.
