Novelis is the global leader in aluminum flat rolled products and the world’s largest recycler of aluminum, supplying high‑quality, low‑carbon aluminum solutions to key industries including automotive, aerospace, beverage packaging, and construction. The company focuses on sustainability by maximizing recycled content to reduce energy use and emissions. It works closely with major global brands to deliver innovative, high‑performance aluminum materials while advancing circular economy goals.
Although aluminum can be more expensive per kilogram compared to other materials, overall system costs are reduced by using less material and downsizing high-value components such as batteries and electric motors, demonstrating that strategic lightweighting is both sustainable and economically viable. CO2 benefits result from both the manufacturing phase (use of high recycle content Aluminium, lightweighting triggering secondary mass savings and rationalizing other components - less material used), as well as during the use phase of the lighter vehicle requiring less energy to operate. For battery applications, the choice of aluminum is not made at the expense of performance. Novelis offers competitive and sustainable flat rolled solutions for most required applications (structural, thermal, etc.), along with simplified designs that enable efficient manufacturing and reduce joining requirements.
Aluminium is a critical raw material and should not be wasted. Secondary Aluminium must be fully valued, as primary supply struggles to meet the overall demand. Beyond supply constraints, sustainability arguments strongly favor recycled aluminium, which allows for up to 95% CO2-emission reductions and 90% energy-intensity savings. Novelis will present examples of newly developed circular solutions to recycle Aluminum “from Automotive to Automotive”, and even “from application to application”. Avoiding “downcycling” – the reuse of material in lower quality applications is key to keep the intrinsic value of the original material.

Dr. Jean-François Despois is Global Automotive Sustainability Senior Manager at Novelis. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Management from The Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Lausanne, a Master’s degree in Material Science and Engineering, and a PhD in Mechanical Metallurgy from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland.
He has more than 20 years experience at Novelis in the field of Aluminium for automotive applications, covering product, process, and new business development. In his current role, Jean-François defines the sustainability roadmap for the Automotive segment globally, making sure the relevant products and technologies are developed to meet ambitious CO2 emissions and recycle content targets.
Jean-François Despoisは、Novelis社のグローバル・オートモーティブ・サステナビリティ・シニアマネージャーを務めています。ローザンヌ大学で経済・経営学の学士号を、スイス連邦工科大学ローザンヌ校（EPFL）で材料科学・工学の修士号および機械冶金学の博士号を取得。ノベリス社において、自動車向けアルミニウム分野で20年以上の経験を持ち、製品開発、プロセス開発、新規事業開発に深く携わってきました。現在は、同社の自動車部門におけるグローバルなサステナビリティ・ロードマップの策定を主導しており、意欲的なCO2排出削減目標やリサイクル率の達成に向けた、製品・技術開発の推進に尽力している。
